This alert applies to the following parks:
Due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred bringing large swells, extreme high tides, and strong winds, all camping areas on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) within the Minjerribah Recreation Area and Naree Budjong Djara National Park have closures applied. All camping areas in Teerk Roo Ra National Park on Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island) are CLOSED.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Coastal Hazard Warning and QLD Topical Cyclone Watch for this area, with conditions expected to worsen. Beach conditions are expected to deteriorate, with erosion, washouts, fallen trees, and debris making some areas unsafe. Beach driving may also be dangerous – avoid unnecessary travel and, if you must drive, plan to do so at low tide when safe.
Closures apply to purchasing camping permits until further notice:
- All camping areas on Main Beach, Flinders Beach, Blaksley’s camping area (Minjerribah, North Stradbroke Island) and Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island).
Dangerous beach conditions include:
- Large, unpredictable swells and rough surf;
- Extreme beach erosion, submerged hazards, and dangerous tides;
- Strong winds causing tree falls and unstable dunes; and
- Flooding risks in low-lying areas.
For camping bookings on Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island) and at Blaksley’s camping area, please contact QPWS if you require assistance with a refund qpws@des.qld.gov.au .
